When Paul speaks of those who are rewarded for doing good works Rom. The hypothetical view fits with the theme of the section as a whole Rom. It seems more likely, however, that Paul is speaking here of real obedience that is rewarded on the last day—such obedience being the result of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, as Paul explains at the conclusion of the chapter Rom.

This obedience or disobedience was usually related to the specific commands of Yahweh as contained in the law, yet they conceived of God as giving commands by other means.
Note especially the rebuke of Samuel to Saul: "Because thou obeyedst not the voice of Yahweh, The importance of obedience is just as greatly emphasized.
