Throughout all the books, I just wanted more and this third and final book didn't deliver. The idea is fantastic, the framework for the plotlines is great, but it just wasn't ramped up enough for me.
Not enough drama, not enough going on, some characters fell a bit flat - not much development or change.. Chloe grew up a little within her role in the Pride but even that transformation was somewhat quick and shallow, the climax I just finished this third book in the Nine Lives of Chloe King series.
Chloe grew up a little within her role in the Pride but even that transformation was somewhat quick and shallow, the climax was disappointing, easy, and fell a bit flat. I would say I want more books but I think I want more books because I want more depth to Chloe's world and stories and the only way that would happen is for more books to happen. It would have been nice to have a fully, deeply, explored world within the 3 books - much more satisfying! The book series did have some good points - as I said, I loved the idea and the plotlines that were starting to emerge.
The characters were fun and I enjoyed some of the pop-culture references sprinkled throughout. Bottom line recommendation would be - if you have some spare time and you don't have anything left on your "must read" list, then this is a fun one to pick up for a light read but don't expect anything epic.
Sep 02, Aurora rated it liked it Shelves: books-i-read , fantasy-sci-fi. I originally picked the first book up, because I liked the idea of a cat girl, and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The third book of the series upset me a little bit, because of it's unfinished ending.
I get the feeling that the author was going to write more, but never did. It just left me a little unsatisfied. It was an OK read. I mean, if I was a little bit younger then I would have definitely enjoyed it more, because reading it now I felt it was childish at some moments. It doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad book.
The ending was nice, everybody was happy and they would continue with their "normal" lives. Now I would want to, also, see the TV series and compare it to the books.
Aug 12, Cassandra rated it it was ok. Not how i wanted to end at all. Sep 24, Victoria rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this book much more then the first two. I was especially affected by the character development. In my opinion Chloe became such a stong and independent protagonist.
I loved her in this novel because you get to see how much she matured and the reader can tell how much stress Chloe feels. Any normal person would have the same reaction that Chloe had and thats what I really appreciated in this book.
Another character I was impressed with was Amy. I basically hated her in the first I really enjoyed this book much more then the first two. I basically hated her in the first two novels and didn't understand why she was so "close" to Amy. In this book Amy's attitude changed so much and you could really tell how much this entire experience affected her.
All in all, the most outstanding aspect to this book was the characters. Dec 29, Melissa rated it it was ok Shelves: ya. Maybe 2. I did like this one the best of the trilogy, though it started to lose me during the last third or so. It is an easy and quick read, but it was just too crass or something for my taste, and some of the relationships were poorly sketched toward the end. Some plot threads just disappeared and at least one just kind of ended off screen with little fanfare despite being a really big deal.
One positive is that Chloe was perhaps likable by book three, even if any reference to the One Maybe 2. One positive is that Chloe was perhaps likable by book three, even if any reference to the One being pure of heart still sounds a little bit like a joke. Oct 16, Jade rated it it was ok. This is one of the most moronic, pointless series I've ever read. Again with the 16 year-old sex. Again with the 'hey, here's a cool plot point Again with the utterly pointless, underdeveloped characters, and really nothing at all to add to any over-arching plot.
I'm so glad this is done. Mar 05, Bruna rated it liked it. I really liked how Chloe empowered herself but I felt like this series still needed a fourth book May 13, Jax rated it it was amazing.
I barely review my books but I am so glad that she ended up with Brian. Apr 28, Elyse ElyseReadsandSpeaks rated it it was ok. Alright, I'm done with all three. Man, these were not good. At all. But no, not good. View 2 comments. Jun 03, Georgeanne rated it liked it Shelves: young-adult , fiction.
Interesting read. More focused on the supernatural plot. Jul 29, Miranda Summerset rated it really liked it. Dec 18, Jess Reidt rated it it was amazing. Last one was the best. Book and show were way different. They don't match, like, at all. Apr 29, Bee rated it liked it. This was super boring comparatively. Jul 05, April rated it really liked it. Great ending to a very intriguing series.
Well except for the fact that Chloe did not end up with who I wanted her to. Sep 07, Emma Jasper rated it liked it. Dec 03, Celeste rated it liked it Shelves: chloe-king. Great conclusion to the story! Mar 13, Kat rated it liked it. I am conflicted about this book. I loved some of the ideas, like violence only begets more violence and sacrifice for others.
The vigilantes are not a good thing and always end up badly was fantastic Also some scenes were great. Chloe's clarity while looking down at San Francisco was nice and simple. The character development sucked.
The characters who were supposed to be in love, well I had to be told about their interest I didn't feel it.
The plot twist wasn't a twist at all because the author I am conflicted about this book. The plot twist wasn't a twist at all because the author had told in the previous book what was going to happen. The ending was soooo bad. I know young adult novels like this end at the dance but really so many other ways this could have ended. Plus there were at least three made four threads left dangling. I felt like the author left a possibility for a fourth but the reception wasn't good enough for the publisher to do one.
Mar 19, Kayla rated it did not like it Shelves: dnf. Oct 15, Jovy rated it liked it. And this is the final book of the series It seems to show how mature and flexible she was. As the MTV Teenwolf characters always say, "it's better to tell them the truth" - finally Brian kissed Chloe when he thought he was dying at the Mai "private medical center" after Chloe and Amy rescued him from Dickless oops, I mean Richard. Chloe and Brian also did something more intense than kissing the night before the "truce meeting" happened and nothing bad or deadly happened to Brian at all.
I like this version better compared to the tv version where Brian died because he thought Chloe died due to a gunshot wound. I love this version because he died alone in his apartment in the tv version. I was a bit disturbed by his "very fatherly attitude" towards Chloe. I'm not sure what I wanted to happen to him, which would give me more satisfaction - this death or some other kind of punishment.
He was not in the tv version. She was trusting her instincts, it was such a "Madam Secretary" move or way of solving issues to anyone who did not get this analogy, it's a CBS tv show. This truce meeting was not in the tv version. She wasn't planning on it but I'm assume that the historical conversations with Kim stuck in her mind and it was a subliminal decision which will be to her great benefit as a leader in the future. By the end of book two, Brian and Chloe have renewed their love for each other, however this means that Brian must officially quit the Order.
It is therefore not really a surprise that in this third book of the trilogy, Chloe discovers Brian beaten to near death by members of the Order who regard him as a traitor. Chloe doesn't want to bring Brian to the hospital because they might ask difficult questions, so she brings him to Firebird Mansion, which is Sergei's mansion and the Mai headquarters. At Firebird Mansion, all the Mai are surprisingly obedient and unquestioning and they acknowledge her as the One.
Before Chloe leaves the mansion, she checks on Brian's condition. Brian wakes up and kisses Chloe before passing out. Chloe is horrified since Mai and humans cannot share intimate relations because apparently the Mai are toxic to humans due to a centuries-long curse borne from violent crimes the Mai committed against the humans in their past.
Chloe thinks Brian had kissed her because he thinks he's going to die anyway. Later on, Chloe meets with Sergei who seems to accept that she is now the rightful heir of Pride leadership.
He tells her that he will help to arrange for a big meeting with all the Mai, where they will perform the official ritual to make her the new leader. Over the next few days, Chloe notices that Brian's condition doesn't seem to be worsening. She decides to find Xavier. Xavier was a guy Chloe had a momentary dalliance with in the first book of the trilogy - a dalliance that ended up with Xavier being hospitalized because of the Mai toxin.
Chloe discovers that Xavier has miraculously healed. In fact, he healed on the very same day that Chloe sacrificed her life to save her mom at the end of book two of the trilogy. Chloe discusses this with her Mai friend, Kim, who is a "Mai geek" or sorts and Kim thinks that Chloe has broken the Mai curse by sacrificing one of her nine lives to save a human her adopted mom.
Later on, Sergei asks Chloe to meet with him at an abandoned theater to discuss the whereabouts of Chloe's biological father. Chloe ends up being trapped at the theater with The Rogue, the fanatical Tenth Blader who tried to kill her in book one of this series - the Tenth Blader that she thought was dead. Chloe learns that Sergei had been working with The Rogue all along and that because of their collusion, The Rogue was able to kill Chloe's biological mother and sister, allowing Sergei to gain control of the Pride.
For just a moment, Anna King looked like a suburban housewife, not a single mom who lawyered by day and had to deal with her adopted freaky lion girl at night. Do you want anything to eat?
There had suddenly been a lot of extra meat in the fridge, and while Chloe wished her mom would stop trying to be so subtly and awkwardly supportive, she was secretly grateful. I really want to get this done. She began to head up the stairs to her room.
Thanks, Chloe said. Chloe told her all about her secret powers, the Mai, the Tenth Bladers who kidnapped her, how when she was dead, she saw her biological mom. Her mom had sipped scotch and listened.
Finally they both cried and hugged, and that was that. But things had changed between them, and she was uncomfortable even thinking about it.
That was a big, heavy thing for a mother to accept, a mother who still thought of herself as protector and guardian. I should do something bad and get grounded, she half decided. That would set things normal real fast. Open navigation menu. Close suggestions Search Search. User Settings. Skip carousel. Carousel Previous. Carousel Next. What is Scribd? Cancel anytime.

The Chosen was the only Night World novel that I had vivid memories of reading in my adolescence; I'm fairly certain that it's the first one I found, in K-mart, without a doubt. I remember the cover, with Rashel lifting her wooden sword over her head, well. At twelve, I only read a few in the series. My reading habits were not nearly as methodical in those days; I had no problem with reading books out of order--in fact, I preferred it--or not finishing a series entirely, or even skipping a book if it struck me as subpar.
I remember that none of the other books in the Night World sequence captured me the way The Chosen did, so I didn't read much further after that, instead moving on to Smith's now soon-to-be-rereleased Dark Visions books.
I had assumed, in those days, that the rest of Night World seemed less well-written and dangerous because I read The Chosen first.
